Upgrade of Our Genetic Engineering Facility to Biosafety Level 2

The competent Bavarian authority for genetic engineering supervision has approved the upgrade of Labor LS’s facility to Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) in accordance with German genetic engineering regulations. Previously classified as BSL-1, our facility is now authorized to handle genetically modified organisms (GMOs) of Risk Groups 1 and 2.

These GMOs are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, for example in the production of recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies, (mRNA) vaccines, and gene therapeutics.

With this extended authorization, Labor LS can now offer even broader analytical support, including:

  • Sterility testing
  • Endotoxin testing
  • Bioburden test
  • Molecular biology analyses such as mycoplasma contamination testing (qPCR) and vector copy number (VCN) determination (dPCR)

Important note:

For GMOs of Risk Group 2, prior coordination with our team is required before commissioning and sample submission, as our supervisory authority must be involved. For Risk Group 1, existing procedures remain unchanged.
